Roslindale Open Studios Turns 20 on the Weekend the Square Goes Car-Free

What does Roslindale Square look like when cars are kept out, the commuter rail stops running and more than 100 artists open their doors at once? Residents will see it on October 17 and 18. Roslindale Open Studios is marking its 20th year with more than 100 local and visiting artists at more than 40 locations, open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. On Sunday the city is holding its first Open Streets Boston event in Roslindale, and the square will be closed to vehicles from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Needham Line trains won't run between Needham Heights and South Station from about 11 p.m. Friday through the end of the weekend, and there's no shuttle bus.

Taken one at a time, each of these is a line on a calendar. Taken together, they shape how the whole weekend will work. The art is concentrated in and around the square, the square is giving its streets to people on foot, and the train that usually brings people in from elsewhere is out. For anyone who lives within walking distance, this is a weekend to spend on foot.

The Open Studios Map Sits Inside the Closure

The 2026 Roslindale Open Studios brochure lists four group sites, each with several artists under one roof.

  1. Roslindale Congregational Church, 25 Cummins Highway, with 10 artists
  2. Emerald Society, 10 Birch Street, with 10 artists
  3. The Substation, 4228 Washington Street, with 22 artists
  4. Roslindale House, 120 Poplar Street, with 15 artists

Compare those addresses with the city's Open Streets map. The map labels Belgrade Avenue, Corinth Street, Poplar Street, Birch Street, Cohasset Street, Cummins Highway and Washington Street, and it marks Adams Park. All four group hubs sit on streets named on that map. The mayor's office announced the route as Corinth and Poplar Streets, and the city's event page describes it as the square between Belgrade Avenue and Washington Street.

The group sites are only part of the count. The brochure also lists 34 artists working out of their home studios around the neighborhood and 15 or more "Artists in the Square." Several local businesses are hosting artists as well. Among them are Russ & Mimi's, Sweeties, Midnight Morning, Rozzie Fitness, Webster Clubhouse, Create and Weesh. Weesh closed its Birch Street walk-in counter at the end of June. At the time, its owner said preordered pickups would continue there three times a week, alongside pop-ups. The brochure links an interactive map at bit.ly/RozzieOS2026.

Two home studios have scheduled events of their own, both running 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. At 237 Metropolitan Avenue, Roslindale Organicarts and Ana Crowley Noordzij are offering tastings of local fruits and vegetables and showing ceramics in progress. At 17 Brookdale Street, Sarah Richi's Fine Art and Children's Gallery has refreshments and space for young artists to make work, depending on the weather.

Saturday Runs on the Market, Sunday on the Street

The two days have different anchors. Saturday overlaps with the Roslindale Village Main Streets farmers market, which runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Adams Park, 4225 Washington Street, through November 21. Sunday overlaps with the Open Streets window, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Open Studios family programming at Birch Street Plaza is split along the same lines.

Most of Sunday's Birch Street Plaza schedule falls inside the car-free window. The exception is the last set. Debo Ray, a Grammy-nominated vocalist whose music spans R&B, jazz, rock and funk, goes on at 2:30 and plays until 4 p.m. That's when the city reopens the streets, an hour after Open Streets programming ends. Across the series, the city says Open Streets events feature food trucks, face painting, balloon animals, crafts, interactive games, photo installations and performances. No Roslindale lineup of performers or food trucks had been published as of early October.

The Substation's bar is open during Open Studios hours on both days. On Saturday it opens from 12 to 5 p.m. and again in the evening until 11. Its Sunday listing puts it plainly: "Sip and peruse!"

Getting Around Without the Needham Line

The car-free square and the missing train work in the same direction. If you drive, Sunday parking along the Open Streets route is prohibited from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Taking the commuter rail to Roslindale Village isn't an option at all that weekend. Here are the details residents need for the rest of the month:

  • October 16–18: No Needham Line service between Needham Heights and South Station from about 11 p.m. Friday through the October 17–18 weekend, and no shuttle. The MBTA points riders to bus routes 35, 36 and 37 for Orange Line connections at Forest Hills. It also says a West Roxbury trip to South Station could take at least 35 extra minutes.
  • October 19, 23 and 26: No Needham Line service between Forest Hills and South Station. Riders are directed to the Orange Line.
  • Through the end of the year: The West Roxbury Parkway bridge over the Needham Line closed July 19 for a five-month replacement. Parkway traffic is detoured onto Belgrade Avenue toward Centre Street. MassDOT has also said a later repaving phase will send Belgrade traffic through Beech Street and Anawan Avenue, but no date has been set.

That bridge is the reason the October 4 Roslindale Day parade didn't follow its usual route down Belgrade Avenue to Holy Name. This year it turned onto Robert Street, climbed to South Street and reached Centre Street that way. The October rail suspensions are tied to work on the same bridge replacement, along with signal and track upgrades at South Station.

The Substation Carries the Rest of the Month

Open Studios weekend makes clear how much of the square's October runs through one building. The Substation sits at 4228 Washington Street, at Cummins Highway across from Adams Park. It hosts the largest group of Open Studios artists, and its calendar keeps filling up after the weekend ends.

Before the weekend, it holds an Oktoberfest celebration on Sunday, October 11, from 1 to 5 p.m., with a polka workshop from 2 to 3. Afterward come The Open Circuit's open mic, "THE JUKE!," on Thursday, October 22, from 7 to 11 p.m., and RCS Retro Game Night on Friday, October 23, from 4 to 11 p.m. The game night features Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and board games. The Cardivalle trading card show follows on Wednesday, October 28, from 5 to 9 p.m. The building is closed for a private event on Saturday, October 24, from 3 p.m.

Roslindale Village Main Streets holds its 2026 gala there on Thursday, October 29, from 7 to 10 p.m. The next night brings a Halloween double bill. At 7 p.m. the Roslindale Film Society screens Night of the Living Dead. Costumes are encouraged, tickets are $7 in advance through roslindalefilmsociety.com or $10 at the door, and beer, wine and food are for sale. At 9 p.m. the jazz-funk group Use The Force plays a Halloween set that includes The Addams Family Theme and This Is Halloween.

Adams Park, across the street, has its own dates. Mayor Michelle Wu holds a free coffee hour there on Thursday, October 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. The farmers market sets up every Saturday through November 21.

On Halloween itself the schedule moves to the Arnold Arboretum. Docent Paul Eldrenkamp leads a free 90-minute Peters Hill Tour on trees and history on Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., meeting at Poplar Gate.

At Mission Realty Advisors, we follow Roslindale's calendar for the same reasons residents do. Events like Open Studios, a car-free Sunday and a month of transit changes affect how the square works for the people who live around it. If you're thinking about when to sell a home in Roslindale and want to plan around the neighborhood's own schedule, Request a Market Strategy & Home Valuation and we'll go through the timing with you.
